BioBlitz 2009
Do you ever wonder how a species gets its name? Or why a diversity of species is important to our world? Or how maintaining and preserving our wilderness areas is an important part of conserving this diversity?
If you do, come join us in answering these questions on Saturday June 6th, 2009 for the 2nd annual BioBlitz!
What is a BioBlitz? A BioBlitz is a 24-hour survey of a wilderness area, in which scientists count and identify the biodiversity of species contained in the area. To learn more about what a BioBlitz is, visit BioBlitz
Event The public is invited to take part in a variety of presentations and activities at the Lebanese Cultural Centre (345 Kearney Lake Rd.) and the Maskwa Aquatic Club (91 Saskatoon Dr.). A number of local community groups will on hand to demonstrate what biodiversity is and why it is important for conservation.
Wilderness Area The survey area for this year's event will take place at Blue Mountain-Birch Coves Lakes, which is a candidate area for protection under Nova Scotia's Wilderness Areas Protection Act.
As of April 27th 2009, a newsletter was released on the Saint Mary's University website stating that Dr. Catherine Conrad, a Geography Professor will recieve $46,636 from the federal government to aid in establishing a sustainable community-based watershed monitoring program in Nova Scotia.
